Max Lanza looks back on how special it is to win the Challenger Trophy win in his home race once again.
Max Lanza is once again a Challenger Trophy winner at Vallelunga. After missing out on a home win in 2024, Lanza returned with vengeance by returning to the top step of the podium in 2025.
Lanza was aiming for a better result in Italy after a lackluster weekend in Spain. The 44-year old considers Vallelunga as more than just a home round for numerous reasons.
For one, Lanza was born in Rome. Vallelunga is the closest professional racing venue to Rome, given its location is only 25 miles south of the Italian capital.
The close proximity gives a major bonus. His closest fans and families are able to attend the event with ease.
Naturally, the added support will give Lanza an extra dose of motivation that is hard to get elsewhere.
“Winning is always special, but winning at home is something else entirely,” said Lanza in his official post-race release. “With a crowd like this, there’s simply no comparison!”
“We were quick from the very first session and maintained a strong pace all weekend. I really wanted to do well here in front of everyone, and we pulled it off!”
Lanza’s victory in Challenger Trophy – done in the Saturday race – was pretty fortuitous.
The Italian was running six positions behind Claudio Remigio Cappelli when Cappelli was forced to retire due to a broken suspension.
This gave Lanza the chance to move into the Trophy lead. He played it safe afterwards and easily won from Michael Bleekemolen.
“I had a good setup in the car,” said Lanza after the race. “My team did a fantastic job. I’m very happy for my fans and my guests. It’s been very busy, but it’s good.”
Lanza stood little chance of fighting Cappelli on Sunday. Cappelli fought against championship contenders Gianmarco Ercoli and Paul Jouffreau throughout the race.
Despite this, Lanza still managed to bring home a runner-up finish. This is enough to keep Lanza in the Trophy fight, as he now only has a four points deficit against Cappelli in the overall standings.
“I struggled managing the tire at the end of the race,” said Lanza afterwards. “It was not an easy race.”
“13th place and second place in the Challenger Trophy were good results. Now we need to keep up the momentum heading into the next race at Brands Hatch.”
