Giorgio Maggi is set to become the teammate of former EuroNASCAR driver Leonardo Colavita in Double TT Racing’s Ferrari 488 Challenge for this week’s Italian GT Championship round at Monza.

The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will be returning to Italy for the NASCAR GP Italy at Autodromo Vallelunga on 8-9 July, but Race Art Technology’s Giorgio Maggi will be heading to Italy early for an appearance in the Campionato Italiano Gran Turismo (CIGT) this week.

As announced by CIGT’s organizers ACI Sport, Maggi is scheduled to join Double TT Racing for CIGT’s second round at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Maggi will be racing alongside Leonardo Colavita, who made the switch to CIGT in the off-season after one and a half season in EuroNASCAR.

“There will be 25-year-old Swiss driver Giorgio Maggi in the Ferrari 488 Challenge of Double TT Racing at the second round of the Sprint series of the Italian Gran Turismo Championship,” announced ACI Sport.

“The driver from Lucerne will replace Michele Rugolo and will be joined by 17-year-old Leonardo Colavita from Rome, who has already made a name for himself in the first two races of the GT Cup PRO-AM class at Misano.”

Maggi himself is no stranger when it comes to sportscar racing. Maggi raced in sportscars before he entered EuroNASCAR in 2019 and while his main focus lies on Europe’s premier stock car racing series, he has continued to race sporadically in sportscars.

Belgian team PK Carsport, themselves no stranger with EuroNASCAR, has signed Maggi as one of the team’s endurance drivers in Belcar for the past few years. The partnership between Maggi and PK has led the reigning Junior Trophy winner to win the overall classification of the 24 Hours of Zolder in 2019.

Double TT Racing’s Onofrio Veneziani, also no stranger to EuroNASCAR due to his long-time involvement as a team owner in the series for teams such as Double T, Racers Motorsport and the short-lived Vict FEED Racing, has expressed his excitement of having Maggi join his protege Colavita in the team’s No. 199 Diagnostix Ferrari 488 Challenge at Monza.

“I’m very happy with the arrival of Giorgio,” said Veneziani in the official press release. “He is a driver that I know well for having participated in European NASCAR. He is very fast, experienced, and he will only do well in our car together with a young teammate of good hopes and talent as Leonardo.”

“We are betting on both of them to get results. The car is performing well, the team is in good shape and for this I have to thank Michele [Rugolo] for the development of the team that brought us strong results in the two races in Misano.”
