Profile:
Famed for his ties with the Monegasque royal family thanks to his friendship with Prince Albert II, Mauro Serra is passionate towards sports in general. A former racing driver who at point became Theodore Racing’s test driver in Formula One, Serra moonlights as a bobsled athlete for the small nation whenever motorsport enters the off-season period.
Having first met the Prince in 1981 after he finished his studies in America, bobsled gave Serra a chance to develop his famed partnership with Prince Albert and later on, the Monegasque royal family. Both parties happened to meet again at Saint Moritz in 1987: Prince Albert was attempting to get Monaco qualified for the 1988 Winter Olympics, while Serra was racing in the Swiss national bobsleigh championship.
The Prince and Serra soon realized that sports and show business can be used as a “force of good”, as quoted from Serra’s interview with Hello Monaco in 2019. Thus, both men went on to form A.S. Star Team for the Children in 1993, an exhibition football team made up of famed athletes and celebrities that hosted yearly charity matches – usually hosted near the time of the Monaco Grand Prix – to raise funds for children around the world.
Serra now devotes the time running the Ex.El International organization that he founded to help organize the yearly Star Team for the Children events, but he still managed to find time to race every now and then.
One such occasion came in 2016, when he briefly entered the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series as a competitor in the EuroNASCAR 2 championship with Alex Caffi Motorsport in the fifth round at Adria. He entered EuroNASCAR to show his support to fellow Monaco resident Alex Caffi, whose team made their debut that weekend to start Caffi’s long-time involvement as a team owner in the series.
