V8 Thunder Cars announced plans to host a Teams Championship in 2025 if there’s sufficient interest from its competitors.
The landscape of V8 Thunder Cars is set to change for 2025. For the first time ever, V8TC plans to host a Teams Championship in the upcoming season.
The introduction of V8TC’s Teams Championship was announced on 28 January 2025. It revealed not only the outline, but also the regulations and prize money structure of the championship.
“The Team Championship is conducted by PASAB to create a new dimension for the participants and increase collaboration between the different drivers,” announced V8TC’s organizers Performance Automotive Scandinavian AB (PASAB).
PASAB specified that teams contesting for the Teams Championship must follow the following regulations:
- The team competes under a common team name.
- A participating team must consist of 2 (two) cars. Proof must be shown to showcase that the two cars are part of the same entity.
- The team must have a common recognition for their cars. PASAB specified that this can be implemented in the form of a shared color scheme, shared design or a common team sponsor.
- Points are awarded to the car, not the driver. A car can therefore score points in the Teams Championship even if it is driven by different drivers.
Points system for the Teams Championship will be implemented differently to the drivers championship.
The drivers championship awards points for the top-10 drivers. V8TC currently uses the FIA common points system of 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, with an additional point up for grabs for fastest lap.
For the Teams Championship, points will be awarded to the top-26 competitors instead. 30 points will be awarded to the winner, followed by 27 and 25 points for the podium finishers and 23 for fourth. From then, points will be reduced in a single point increment.
In short, points for the Teams Championship are given in a 30-27-25-23-22-21-20-19-18-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 format.
V8TC offers bonus points for the three teams with the smallest difference in best lap time between their two cars. The team with the least difference will receive 15 bonus points, with 10 and 5 points awarded for second and third respectively.
Bonus points are also offered if a team fielded drivers from two different V8TC Trophies. A team will earn 30% more points if their two drivers compete for two different trophies.
Interestingly, the overall drivers championship counts as a “trophy” according to the regulations. In theory, this meant that a team can still received 30% bonus points if they fielded a driver solely for the drivers championship in one car and another driver competing for both the drivers championship and either the Junior or the Super Star Trophy in another car.
Prize money for the Teams Championship is awarded on a per race basis. The number for the race-by-race monetary prize is currently unknown.
What is known is the total prize money on offer for the top-3 teams in the championship. The Teams champion will receive 60,000 Swedish krona (approximately $5,440) at the end of the season. Runner-ups will receive 30,000 krona ($2,720), while third place will receive 20,000 krona ($1,813).
It should be noted, however, that PASAB prioritizes the drivers championship over the Teams Championship. If interest proved to be too low, then PASAB have the right to cancel the Teams Championship for 2025.
“We would like to emphasize to registered teams that the National Championship has the highest priority when it comes to resources such as media investments, work efforts, results presentation, etc,” PASAB added.
“We will of course also try to highlight the Team Championship as much as we can and space allows. However, if priorities have to be made, the National Championship will come first.”
“PASAB has the right to cancel the entire Team Championship if there are too few entries. PASAB also has the right to approve entries after the series’ last entry date and to reject entries from teams / drivers who have previously unpaid invoices regarding series fees or spare parts, or who PASAB deems may damage the series in any way.”
